To Aru Kagaku no Railgun 12 – AIM Burst
This is definitely one of the best episodes of this season so far. Monster foetus verses Misaka’s electricity. The foetus that came out of Kiyama’s head transforms into this monster that heads off in a direction that just happens to have a nuclear facility in its path. As the Level Upper goes out of Kiyama’s control, Uihara takes the program that cures the Level Upper users to Anti-Skill and Mikoto heads off against this beast.
A good action scene always has tentacle raep? Mikoto’s attacks initially have no effect due to a regeneration ability, until Uiharu and Anti-Skill get the treatment program played throughout Academy City. With Level Upper users being disconnected from the network, the monster is no longer capable of regenerating and Mikoto is able to easily handle it. After a lot of electrical frying and a trademark coin railgun, the foetus is heated and its core blasted away.
And so, the Level Upper arc goes out with a bang and a few kisses from Kuroko. The animation was good, the battle scenes were also pretty well done. I didn’t really think the OP would be as good a fit for the background music during a fight, but it still ended up nicely.
The English version of the ED by ELISA was a very nice choice leading out the episode (although I struggled to hear it clearly and probably wouldn’t have noticed it if it weren’t for the subs).
There were a few discrepancies between the anime and the manga for this episode, but nothing major that will affect the story overall. Although Kiyama’s foreshadowing to the Sisters Arc might have been one line they probably shouldn’t have removed.
These girls are also part of the Sisters Arc, slight spoiler for later on when Mikoto goes on a rampage. I can’t wait to see them in action, their character designs are really nice and the girl wearing the béret was cool in the manga. But what was up with the woman talking on the phone about the experimental nuclear facility? I’m pretty sure I don’t remember her in the manga and somehow it makes me feel as if that wasn’t actually a nuclear facility…Next week is an anime-original filler! And what do you know, it’s a mandatory bikini episode. We’re halfway through the season and only the Level Upper arc is over? I do wonder how much actual story material they have left. I’m guessing they’ll end everything for this season with Accelerator and the Sisters Arc – which would mean they wouldn’t have progressed as far (time-wise) as the Index season did. Though the end of this arc is around when Index destroyed the Tree Diagram.
