Since towards the end of last year, there have been various announcements regarding the 2009 Spring Anime Releases. The first episode doesn’t start technically until the 30th of March with Chi’s Sweet Home Atarashii Ouchi as the first series rather than an OVA.

As you can see from the table above, there are in total 42 different series airing this spring and 21 OVA series.

To be quite frank, most of the series that are listed I have absolutely no interest in. However, a few have caught my eye which means I will be watching (and possibly blogging about). I’m sure FMA fans will be rearing for the second season. So, what has caught my eye so far?

1. K-ON!

K-On!’s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join their school’s light music club to try to save it from being abolished. However, they are the only members of the club, and none of them have any experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music.

I don’t know what it is about this series, but it seems like it will be good. I’m certainly interested in it and want to see something new in the form of a more musical based anime. This is a KyoAni production, and should hopefully be good.

It begins airing on the 3rd of April on TBS and BS-i in Japan.

Fansub Groups that have indicated that they may take on the series: Chihiro, SS-Eclipse, Frostii and CoalGuys

– I’d probably be more inclined to watch SS-Eclipse’s subs, if they do pick up the series. Otherwise CG.

Chances of watching: 9/10

2. Dragonball Kai (DBZ in HD)

This is based off the original Dragonball Z storyline (manga-wise) and is basically the DBZ show re-done with better animation, in High-Definition and with some new scenes. As a DBZ fan from way back, I’m somewhat inclined to take a look at this and see the difference.

This begins airing on the 5th of April on Fuji TV in Japan.

Fansub Groups: SD Project, DBZ Renaissance

Chances of Watching: 6/10

3. Lupin III VS Detective Conan

Now, the famous Kudo Shinichi (a.k.a Conan) in a matchup with a most famous international thief, Arsène Lupin III. Being made out to be a legendary match-up in this new crossover OVA, it certainly is appealing for someone like me who has long been out of the Conan anime series – but still reads the manga. I wonder if their battle of deduction and wits will outmatch the Conan vs Kaitou Kid episodes.

This airs on the 27th of March on Nippon TV in Japan.

Fansub Groups: Frostii & DCTP

Chances of watching: 10/10

A good place to look for who is fansubbing what is here at getfansub’s wiki.

Overall, this season has not a lot that can interest me… which is why after I finish with these three, I will probably try and finish the other series that I’m currently watching. I think I’ll try to catch up on Kurokami if I have more time next month (with Index and ToraDora! both finishing in a week and two weeks respectively).

Oh, and I almost forgot. The so-called “re-airing” of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya may in fact not be a re-airing. Kadokawa is being absolutely stupid and trying to dwindle their Haruhi-ism fandom even more. O.O An article in last month’s Newtype has produced new speculation that it may actually be the new season that will be broadcasted. However, that will remain to be seen until April 3rd, when the series – re-run or not – kicks off.
