Magical Index vs Scientific Railgun

December 6, 2008

Index (Iron Maiden pose)

To Aru Majutsu no Index (とある魔術の禁書目録), or its translated name A Certain Magical Index, is definitely one of my favourites of this season. The story revolves around the two worlds of science and magic colliding together in the life of high school teenager Kamijyo Touma. He first meets Index and then becomes involved with the magical societies and magicians that enter 学園都市 (Academy City). The city is full of scientifically advanced students (espers / psychics), but Touma is a Level 0 (i.e. his power couldn’t be classified). However, his real power is the Imagine Breaker which is a powerful ability that can negate all psychic, magic or godly powers but also his own luck resulting in his misfortunes. He even often says “不幸だ” in the anime, which means “misfortune”.

This series is based off its light novel predecessor. There is also the manga version; which is slightly ahead of the anime at the moment as it skipped Volume 2; and a spin-off called To Aru Kagaku no Chodenjibou (A Certain Scientific Railgun) which focuses on Misaka Mikoto being the protagonist and Touma being a supporting side character.

Although the protagonist to Index is clearly meant to be Touma, I can’t help but want to cast him aside and wish railgun had been picked as the series to be animated. Index too, has been rather annoying herself lately with random unnecessary screams and whining as her transition into a side character occurs. However this video has certainly outlined Index’s moe.

At least my wishes will be granted tomorrow with the anime hitting the third arc of the light novels. As seen in the preview to episode 10 last week, Mikoto’s sisters (imoutos) and the Accelerator are being introduced. This means more airtime for Mikoto which will just be plain awesome.

The Imoutos are clones of Mikoto herself, used in a military experiment in order to boost Accelerator up to Level 6. The Accelerator is Gakuen Toshi’s most powerful psychic, number one out of the Level 5s. I won’t mention his ability (as it is yet to air) but it involves controlling the direction of various things. He is actually seen in the OP fighting against Touma. There are about 20,000 Mikoto imoutos out there in total and if the Accelerator kills all of them without being defeated, he will be granted the “Level 6” status.

Meanwhile, Misaka “Biri-biri” Mikoto is also one of seven of the city’s Level 5 psychics and can generate electricity. She faced off against Touma in the first episode and also caused the city to blackout temporarily overnight when she summoned lightning to try and beat Touma, not knowing his power. Her trademark ability is definitely the railgun, using coins as the projectiles.

And so, I am eagerly awaiting the new arc tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t have any contradictions that the second volume had to the first and yay, railgun ♥. And taking this back to the title, Scientific Railgun > Magical Index in practically every way. Mikoto is plain awesome, even somewhat of the tsundere personality and is a very like-able character.

Yeah but in the light novels Accelerator is the face of the science side, maybe thats the reason why the author made the spin-off to other sector of the public.

PD: Index also is tsundere and is getting slowly in the novels more roles in the plot.

I haven’t read the novels yet, I’m only following the anime right now. And since the anime didn’t go far enough to the point where Accelerator has recovered, Mikoto did seem as the main focus for any events in the science side of the story.
